PLOT
When cheesemonger Gabe Fontaine slices open a prized wheel of Alp Blossom imported from the Dolomites, he expects the usual cascade of scents: dried wildflowers, warm hay, and the faintest whisper of alpine summer. What he does not expect is the folded slip of paper nested beneath the rind, its ink faded to a brownish rust, its message cryptic and urgent: "They buried the truth the same way they buried her. Look to the cave above the Hollowell pasture before the next frost."
Gabe might have dismissed it as an eccentric prank if his most loyal regular, retired schoolteacher Dorothea Crane, had not been rushed to the hospital that same afternoon. The diagnosis is unsettling: a slow-acting alkaloid toxin consistent with something deliberately introduced into a local food supply. Dorothea bought the same batch of Alp Blossom. And now Harrowfield, the tight-knit Vermont village Gabe has called home for three years, is quietly turning on itself.
With a sheriff who trusts paperwork more than instinct, a cheese supplier whose past is murkier than a washed rind, and half the town carrying a secret that dates back thirty years, Gabe will need more than a good palate to find the truth. Good thing he has always been able to taste what other people are trying to hide.
Rinds and Reckoning is a love letter to small-town life, artisan food, and the uncomfortable business of asking questions your neighbors wish you would leave alone.
