PLOT
Harmony Holt has always believed that beauty should be useful. Her hand-thrown teapots, all wildflowers and climbing vines rendered in glazes she mixes herself from local clay and mineral powders, are the pride of Fernwick-on-Bliss. When the Fernwick Heritage Society mounts its annual Founders' Exhibit in the restored train depot, Harmony donates her newest piece as the centerpiece of the refreshments table. It's meant to be a celebration.
Then local historian and society president Cornelius Pratt collapses mid-toast, and by morning he is dead.
The county health inspector finds an anomalous compound in the teapot's glaze. Harmony's reputation, and her livelihood, crumble faster than an under-fired pot. But Harmony knows her glazes. She has mixed every batch herself, in her own studio, from ingredients she can account for down to the gram. Someone added something to her work. Someone used her art as a weapon.
As Harmony digs into Cornelius's past, she discovers the historian had been quietly rewriting Fernwick's history, erasing inconvenient truths about land deeds, a forgotten cemetery, and a founding family's darkest secret. More than one person in this cheerful little town had excellent reasons to silence him permanently.
In a place where everyone knows your name and nobody forgets your mistakes, the hardest thing isn't finding a killer. It's accepting that the killer poured your tea.
