PLOT
Nora Callahan has talked people down from ledges, out of burning buildings, and away from the worst decisions of their lives. Words are her tools, her armor, and sometimes her only shield. After leaving a relationship that systematically dismantled her confidence, she has rebuilt herself into someone who keeps her own walls high and her exit routes clearly marked.
She did not plan on being evacuated from a mountain research station in the middle of a whiteout blizzard. She did not plan on the rescue going wrong. And she absolutely did not plan on spending the night storm-locked in a backcountry shelter with Callum Voss, a man built from silence and granite who clearly wants nothing more than to get her down the mountain and out of his orbit.
Callum does not do long conversations. He does not do questions he cannot answer. And he has not let anyone close since the rescue that went wrong three years ago, the one he survived and his partner did not. He is good at keeping people safe. He is catastrophically bad at letting anyone keep him.
Twelve hours. One storm. Two people who know exactly how much it costs to trust the wrong person. But Nora has spent her career reading what people will not say out loud, and somewhere in the dark of that shelter, she starts to hear something in Callum's silences that she was not prepared for. Something that sounds, impossibly, like her own name being called.
The question is not whether she can reach him. The question is whether, when she does, she will be brave enough to stay.
